You are Aaron Williams, an African American father to a family of four, during the early 1930’s. You were financially stable, a happy man, had a wonderful and loving family. Unfortunately, the stock market crashed in October 29th of 1929, and the led to a decline of sustainable jobs. One day you went to your usual job, working at a factory. When you got to work the first thing you noticed was that names were getting called out and after a couple of names you heard someone say,
“Aaron Williams please report to the main office.” You immediately felt the fear because you have heard the rumors of people being taken to the main office. You are fully aware they are going to fire you, the economy of the factory was affected because by the stock market crash. The factory had to let go of workers because they were unable to pay them. After that everything happens in a blur, you were sent home with the pay they owed you.
When you got home your wife was surprised to see you home so early because you usually worked 8-12 hour shifts. So she asked in a gentle voice,
“ Dear what are you doing here so early, what is troubling you?” You just started at her with an emotionless expression and responded with,
“ I got fired, this stupid stock market crashing is really getting to us now isn't it” you replied and your wife nodded.
She handed you the Chicago Defender newspaper so you could start looking for a job. While flipping through the pages there was a particular advertisement that caught your attention. The advertisement stated that there was a shortage of workers for factories up north. You thought about the decision moving up north for a couple of days you even tried to find a job here in the south but you had no luck. You talked to your wife about moving up north and you both came to the decision of moving up north. Now you are stuck between making the journey by car or selling your car and going up my train.
